pineapple powah

haha okay i didn’t really expect anyone to guess it right so here we go, moment of truth. the yellow stuff isn’t ice cream or pudding or moss-covered egg or mouldy cheese (lol!). it is in fact,

blended pineapple :D and the black stuff on top were tea leaves.

our assignment for chem this term is the lovely art of winemaking :D exciting right! i was so thrilled when i heard about it last year and i’ve been anticipating this term eversince because honestly, i don’t think chem gets any better (or naughtier) than this (: we have to make two 5 litre bathches of wine (which is heaps. read: 10 kilos of fruit), introduce a variable and see how it changes the outcome at the end.

we were given a lot of freedom in deciding what fruit we wanted to use cause it didn’t necessarily have to be grapes. most people chose apples and pears cause they were the safest after having been used in previous years. apparently rock melon turned out to be a disaster, there was like an inch thick of bacteria on the surface. not so good for the teachers who have their rounds of wine tasting at the end of the experiment. anyways we decided on pineapples cause 10 kilos of strawberries is just way too expensive :( regardless, i just recently found out that we’re the only group making pineapple wine so yays for that (:

day 1

the first day was all about blending up the fruits! all pictures from caleb’s cam, i didn’t take any of them. must’ve been about 60 in the span of 2 hours ._.

everything we used had to be completely sterilised to avoid bacteria growth. everyything meaning the blender and the pails and the knives and the chopping board and our hands. completely sterilised meaning rinsed in bleach and then water and then citric acid and then warm water which is… not so good when you get a papercut :( day two was painful :(

day 2

day 2 was very very crazy! we didn’t have enough time at all so we ended up staying back after school plus we had the hardest time trying to even out the sugar levels of both buckets ._. which resulted in a massive decrease in pictures.

day 4

after leaving the yeast to do their thing, we racked our fruit must :D in other words, we got rid of all the gross bits and pulp.

when i got to school the next day, i was told that our glass jars exploded and it caused a mess and i got so freaked out. cause it’s known to happen with the built up of carbon dioxide during fermentation. i later found out that it just overflowed and our chem teacher stayed behind that night to clean up and he managed to save our pineapple but was covered knee high in juice ._. i was so so thankful because i honestly think i would cry if the whole thing got destroyed :(

it could still happen… actually no, i shouldn’t think about it! it’s been in the lab for 3 unchecked days cause it’s labour day today so i’m really hoping it’s okay. it’s like my new baby lol i pay it a visit in the lab whenever i can. all that’s left now is more racking every week or so until it becomes clear wine (:

day one

brainy

severe lack of updates lately i know, blame school! anyways i’ve uploaded some pictures from two recent excursions :)

alrightey first up’s the bio trip to the uni of queensland. we checked out the anatomy museum which displayed actual dead body parts. i was really excited before the trip but when we were there i was a little nervous. it sounded like something right out of a horror movie and we all know how much i love horror movies ._.

but it wasn’t so bad. it was really cool actually looking at hands and feet, there were foetuses(?) from a month to 9 months old. there were brains, skull caps. they all looked more like models than real parts so i guess when i was looking at them it just didn’t really register that they were real… but the heads were kinda scary ._. yea there were heads. okay i didn’t mean to get all grotesque!

the next bit was cooler! we got to go down to the wet lab where the med students do actual body dissections and such but no, we didn’t see any of that. we adorned in lab goggles, gloves and aprons. there was this really strong clinic smell in the air, much like a hospital. even the corridors were hospital-like.

anyways we were shown different human organs. this time they were real… real meaning not harderned or kept in a display glass like the ones in the anatomy museum. it can be a lil overwhelming especially with the strong chemical smell, someone from my class actually fainted ._. we saw a liver, and a liver of an alcoholic (really hard surface… don’t drink too much alco, guys) and a cancerous liver which was 3 times the size of a healthy one *O* we saw a pacemaker and a heart (which looked really different from what i imagined/seen from greys). we were allowed to touch and examine and poke em.

and the best part!! i touched a human brain! :D i don’t mean that in a sick way but it’s really cool, it wasn’t as squishy as i thought it would be and it kept reminding me of sylar from heroes x) oh and cool fact: apparently the more ridges you have in your brain, the more intelligent you are :) no idea how we can actually check that out… i say we just stick to iq tests…

we weren’t allowed to take any pictures (sighs of relief? :P) so no, i don’t have any. i did take pictures of uq though. they’ve got a really beautiful campus and it was o week (orientation) so it was really packed with people and there were lotsa booths around giving away free stuff.

anyways my last day of school was thursday and eventful, it was. i only had one paper and it starts late so i just hung out at home before leaving for school. piled up the car with all my textbooks to return, only to realise that the car won’t start *O* stood there in helpless panic, watch telling me i only had 15 minutes before my paper. walking there would take me 40. that’s when the coolest neighbour ever came to the rescue and drove me to school just in time to sit for the most time consuming paper ever. ever ever, love that word.

thursday was also the day of our semi-formal! :D bronwyn dropped by my place, we picked up naomi and rachel and were on our way to southbanks. the semi was on “the island” which is a boat for party cruises and such. i really hate taking pictures with flash cause it ends up killing everyone’s eyes so i chose the ISO option which is supposed to be good for low light conditions without flash but most of the pics wound up being really blur :( i just got the camera, it’s a sony t70, any suggestions on what setting i should use the next time around? =\ anyways here are some of the pictures :)
